Awards

Queen’s Hospitality Services operates one of the most comprehensive food service programs in Canada. Our dining program provides students, faculty, and staff with one of the top dining programs in Canada. We have an array of dining options, ranging from residential to retail dining and the finest in catering.

SOUL FOOD is an initiative created by the Queen’s Hillel in partnership with Sodexo. The program consists of student volunteers delivering excess foods from the dining halls to homeless shelters within the community. Soul Food not only provides healthy food through community outreach, but also reduces the amount of waste going into landfills.

THE FARMER’S MARKET AT QUEEN’S is in it’s third year of providing the campus community with access to local fresh tasting food. Markets are offered on campus once a month from September to April, showcasing approximately 20 vendors. Queen’s Hospitality Services has been an integral part of brining this program to the campus community.

Queen’s Hospitality Services was voted the SECOND MOST VEGAN FRIENDLY CAMPUS in Canada. The award was presented by the Youth Chapter of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA 2). The award granted based upon online votes, emails and blog posts written by students about schools across the country and what they were doing to provide vegan options on campus.

FAIR TRADE is strongly support by Queens Hospitality Services. Many fair trade items such as coffee, tea, cocoa and sugar are available in the dining halls, and most of the retail outlets that are on campus. Queen’s Oxfam partners with Hospitality Services to promote Fair Trade in the dining halls. This collaboration has provided the group with space for displays and student interaction.

SUSTAINABILITY is a top priority for Queen’s Hospitality Services. Waste displays have been presented in the dining halls to remind students to take only what they need, biodegradable packaging is used for all take-out sandwiches and salads, compostable plates replace clam-shell containers, a compost partnership with Corrections Canada has been initiated to divert waste from landfills, and a Facebook Group “I will not waste food in the dining hall” provides students communication on how to reduce food wastage. A trayless dining program has recently been promoted on campus to reduce the amount of water usage.

Queen’s Hospitality services has collaborated with several student groups on campus to provide awareness for various activities which are ongoing within the campus community. In the past Hospitality Services has collaborated with the Gael’s Varsity Hockey Team to promote game attendance through a “Hockey Showdown” and VIP ticket contest complete with pizza and pop at intermission. Collaborations such as this proven to be successful as a significant increase in game attendance was noted.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING has been made possible through the use of tent cards and displays available to various groups across campus at the dining hall locations. Additionally, local groups have been able to set up display tables within the dining halls to promote various student groups and healthy initiatives.
